Price Effects of the Austrian Fuel Price Fixing Act: A Synthetic Control Study

Fuel prices are commonly perceived to be excessively high, which regularly triggers political discussions about fuel price regulations. Consumers demand stricter regulations provide transparency the current level and protect them from sudden fluctuations. Such already in place several countries, but whether they indeed help lower overall is unclear. In this paper, we study effect of Austria's Price Fixing Act on gasoline diesel levels. Using synthetic control method, construct a counterfactual estimate trends absence intervention. Our empirical results suggest that, immediately after came into effect, 23.4% than predicts. The appears less pronounced amounts 6.6% prices. regulation seems have been effective terms may need further refinements effectively tackle as well.
